February is often seen as a month of love. With Valentine’s Day in the middle of the month, many people take time to show care for family, friends, and neighbours. It can also be a good time to think about how we show love for God’s creation.
In the opening chapters of Genesis, humanity is given the responsibility to care for the earth. Creation is a gift from God, and we are called to treat it with respect and wisdom. Caring for the world around us is not only about protecting nature. It is also about loving our neighbours, both now and in the future.
Small actions can make a real difference. Responsible care for creation does not have to be complicated or expensive. It often begins with simple habits and thoughtful choices.
Here are a few practical ways we can care for creation this month:
- Reduce waste by reusing bags, bottles, and containers where possible.
- Turn off lights and appliances when they are not needed.
- Walk or use public transport for shorter journeys when you can.
- Buy only what you need and avoid unnecessary packaging.
- Support local farmers and businesses.
- Spend time outdoors and give thanks for the beauty of creation.
- Check on neighbours during cold weather and share resources where needed.
Valentine’s Day can also be an opportunity to make thoughtful choices. Instead of buying gifts that create waste, consider giving experiences, homemade treats, or locally made products. A simple meal shared together or time spent with loved ones can often mean more than expensive gifts.
As a church community, we can encourage one another to live carefully and gratefully. Caring for creation is an act of worship because it reflects our love for the Creator. When we look after the world around us, we honour God and help build a healthier future for others.
This February, may we grow in love for God, for one another, and for the creation entrusted to our care.
